A girl walks into a room for an interview, slips and falls face first to the ground in front of the whole panel of interviewers.

Freeze…

What would a typical girl do? She would have felt so embarrassed, her face might have turned blood red and her eyes would have been overflowing with tears of shame and in her mind, the nun would have been crying out “Shame! Shame! Shame!”. But, what the girl does next blows one’s mind.

Unfreeze…

She gets up, straightens her dress and says something incredible that gets her the job.

“I have fallen in the right company.”

Freeze…

This is one of many real world scenarios the speaker took us through to show the significance of effective communication and attitude, at Estrella.

Estrella is a public speaking skills development initiative organized by the FMF Media, held on the 30th of September at Hall 01 of Faculty of Management and Finance, University of Colombo. A workshop focused on developing communication skills of today’s youth as it plays a vital role in one’s self confidence, career and leadership. The guest speaker for the day was a renowned toastmaster, Mr. Mohamud Mohamed Zawahir, Head of Marketing MSD at A. Baur and Company (Private) Limited.

The event unfolded with an interactive introduction by Miss Shidhara Sathsarani and the speaker was introduced and invited onto the stage with, in the words of the speaker himself, “a passionate introduction” by Miss Irfana Ahmed.

This 120 minute workshop, which started at 9.00 am, might be one of those very rare seminars where the whole audience were paying their absolute attention to the speaker without a yawn as the experienced toastmaster knew the right incantations to keep one and all spellbound during the course of the event. And, there lies the success of the event, as the audience not only got to know a great deal about effective public speaking and communication, but also got to see it and experience it first-hand. All thanks to Mr. Zawahir and his effortless charisma in delivering an attention grabbing presentation.

At around 11 am, an entertainment performance showcasing the singing talents of our own Mr. Chathura Madhushan Gulawita and Miss Ayodya Samali concluded the workshop on a high note, literally.

The audience present, comprised of members of FMF Media and other undergraduates from Faculty of Management and Finance, were presented with one of the most knowledge-packed 2 hours in their university life as the knowledge shared in the workshop has enough potential to change their future.

All credits to the chairs of the project, Miss Shidhara Sathsarani and Miss Fathima Irfana Ahmed for pulling off such a delightful project with ease and also credits are due to the coordinator of the English Unit, Miss Supuni Jayawardana, for all her supervision and guidance in ensuring the event is a soaring success.
