Help a Fellow Human

HELP A FELLOW HUMAN

After, the interesting article of "Women representation in Sri Lankan politics", we decided to meet with article " Help a fellow human". This article is written by Gayan Jayasinghe, first year student of Faculty of Management & Finance.

Corona! Corona! Corona! The most heard word of this year and what an year it has been there was always a bit of suspicion in the number 2020. Most of us will never forget this year even though we were at home most of the time. Me as a person coming from a middle class family spent my quarantine without many problems and quite leisurely but this was not the case for most of Sri Lankans. The servant aunty who comes to our house was asked to stop because of this health risks and when I think about it 'the daily income earners' their life may have become far more worse.

Rs. 5000 payment for daily wage earners is given by the government as a compensation for the lost income but whether it is sufficient is still questionable.  A typical family of a daily wage worker has a husband, wife, about 3 children (under 18 years) and one senior member. 4 in every 10 mothers and 2 in every 10 fathers had never been to school. Around 45% of both had completed up to 8th grade or lower. With school closures and sore reliance on parents for home-schooling, this demographic group of daily wage workers is at the highest risk of not being able to give their children the support they would need with home schooling. Furthermore they have limited resources to consume daily and sometimes they might be only having one meal for a day.

It is reasonable to say a lower income earning family is struggling everyday because of the impact of corona and we as human beings should think about our fellow humans. If we can give something for the ones who are in need in any way we can during these challenging times it would be amazing.
