Hall of fame - Mr. Mahela Jayawardena

Cricket….??

Yeah the game we have enjoyed lot with everyone. It gives uncountable things for our lives. Since we are children we used to watched cricket. That is because of it has been attached to our lives. We are sri Lankans, we have a great cricket history since 1940s. the Great Britain introduced cricket to us. In 1975 we have played our 1st ODI against west indies and first test against England.

In late nineties our country got failed in cricket. Winning was lot far from us. But in 1996 we have got the chance to participated to the ICC cricket world cup has been happened in Pakistan. In that period, we were the weakest team in the world. So sad right…?? Yeah me too but I am saying that was the greatest year of our cricket history.  When we went to the world cup we were the last but at the end we have beaten mighty Australia and took the trophy to our mother Lanka.

Since the beginning the of the cricket of our country, we have got some talented and famous players. Some of them are Mr. Sidath, Mr. Roy, Mr. Duleep, Mr. Arjuna and many more guys. At the end of 2005/06 season our team was captained by Mr. Marvan. He got retired in 2006, after his retirement sri Lanka cricket board was looking for someone for the captaincy of our team. There was a 29-year-old black boy, he is an energetic right hand top order batsman and his name is Mahela Jayawardena (MJ). Talking about him he was a former Nalandian and played lot of cricket in school time and after that played domestic cricket and got selected to the national team.

Talking about his batting he is a prolific and stylish batsman with 360 degree shots collaboration. And the best captain after Mr. Arjuna.  In 2007 we have gone to west indies to play the ICC cricket world cup. The team was led by MJ. We have got lucky to made an appearance in the world cup final under his captaincy but unfortunately Australia got the revenge from us. Mahela led our team in all three formats in cricket. And the cricket mind that he has helped us to claimed lots of victories. 624 runs partnership with Sanga and the T20 hundred against Zimbabwe in ICC t20 world cup was the golden instances for method of succeeding. Every time MJ read the game well and he was not hesitating to take risks. Mahela Jayawardena hold lots of records throughout his career. Sadly, we cannot mention all of it here because it takes lots of pages.  He holds the record of most catches in ODI cricket. Except Sri Lanka he gave his contribution for 14 domestic and international teams.

Mr. Jayawardena got retried from his cricket career in 2015 in Melbourne. After his retirement he has started his coaching career. Once he was the batting consultant for England team. With the contribution of Mahela Jayawardena Mumbai Indians has claimed three IPL championships. Not only that in the 100 tournament his team has got the maiden championship. Currently all sri Lankan” s hope is MJ is to be the head coach of our cricket team.

Ahead of ICC men”s t20 world cup were announced as the newest inductee into the prestigious ICC hall of fame. Mahela Jayawardena joins former team mates Muttiah and Sanga in ICC hall of fame. Mahela Jayawardena was a run scoring marvel and world cup star. MJ retired as one of Sri Lankan's greatest ever players, a key member of ICC T20 world cup in 2014 and reached four other major ICC finals.
